What is Burnout?
Burnout is now included in the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an occupational phenomenon. It’s defined as:
“… a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by…:
- feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
- increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and
- reduced professional efficacy.”
In other words, you’re overwhelmed, wiped out, disconnected & disenchanted. You’re just keeping your head above water most days. Sound familiar?
I’m no stranger to burnout. It’s where I found myself after 12 years working as a lawyer/partner in a large firm while trying to keep two babies alive & sustain a strong marriage. Not to mention that in my 8+ years of coaching, it’s the most common wellness issue I see.
Why Burnout is Dangerous:
Burnout is no joke. Long-term exhaustion & chronic stress can lead to serious physical & mental consequences. The stress hormone cortisol can lead to symptoms that include weight gain, high blood sugar, high blood pressure & elevated triglycerides. Those symptoms can significantly increase your risks of heart disease, stroke, Type II Diabetes & many cancers, among other illnesses.
Can I Come Back From Burnout?
